Abstract:

Objective

To explore the effect of obstetric ultrasound teaching mode based on online self-learning and examination on the standardized training ability to identify standard sections of obstetric ultrasound.

Methods

Twenty-one trainees attending standardized training at the Ultrasonography Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were enrolled in March 2021. A questionnaire was used to collect trainees' needs for obstetric ultrasound teaching. The fetal cranial, thoracoabdominal, and cardiac standard planes and symbolic structures were selected as training contents to record videos for teaching. Trainees completed the intensive training and assessment questionnaire through online self-learning. Chi-square test was used to compare the accuracy rate of the trainees before and after training.

Results

Most trainees (95.2%, 20/21) considered the obstetric ultrasound training very important and were quite willing to attend it. There were a total of 22 questions on the identification of fetal cranial, thoracoabdominal, and cardiac standard planes and symbolic structures. The accuracy rates before and after the training were 79.9% (369/462) and 88.7% (410/462), respectively. The accuracy rate for fetal cardiac structure recognition was significantly increased by 11.5% after the training (87.7% vs 76.2%, χ2=11.28, P=0.001).

Conclusion

The intensive training based on online self-learning and examination can improve the ability of trainees to identify fetal cranial, thoracoabdominal and cardiac standard planes and symbolic structures, which can be used as an effective method during obstetric ultrasound training.
