Application of supervision teaching combined with peer-assisted learning in the professional skill training course of standardized training of residents of ultrasound medicine

Abstract:

Objective

To assess the application effect of supervision teaching combined with peer-assisted learning (PAL) teaching in the professional skill training course of standardized training of residents of ultrasound medicine.

Methods

In the Department of Ultrasound of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the combined teaching method of supervision and PAL teaching was adopted in the professional skill training course of standardized training of grades 2018 and 2019 resident doctors from June 2020 to June 2022. The method of supervision combined with PAL teaching was adopted to carry out various system operation training and explanation, mutual aid group learning, and teaching supervised by teachers for them. A weekly system assessment (process assessment) was conducted, and 80 points was deemed as qualified according to the professional skill examination score sheet. After the training, the graduation skill examination (completion examination) was conducted. The passing rate of the graduation skill examination was calculated, and a survey of satisfaction with the teaching was performed using the Likert 5-level scoring method to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching effects of the supervision teaching combined with PAL teaching method.

Results

After the application of the combined supervision teaching and PAL teaching method, the resident doctors of grades 2018 and 2019 ultrasonic medicine passed the professional skill operation examination (process examination) (all ≥ 80 points), with an average score of (88.29±2.78) and (87.49±4.51), respectively. The passing rate of the graduation skill examination among both grades 2018 and 2019 resident doctors was 100%. The satisfaction survey questionnaire was returned by 34 doctors. The results showed that all residents were satisfied or very satisfied with the teaching method and content arrangement. They all believed that the combination of supervision teaching with PAL teaching method would help to master professional skills, improve learning efficiency, and promote communication with teachers.

Conclusion

The supervision teaching combined with PAL teaching method has good effects in the professional skill training course of ultrasound resident standardized training, which may improve the residents' professional skills and provide a new idea for the training and teaching of ultrasound professional skills.
