Evaluating fetal bladder development with three-dimensional ultrasound virtual organ computer-aided analysis

To evaluate the development of fetuses bladder by ultrasound virtual organ computer-aided analysis (VOCAL) technique, and establish the maximum and minimum bladder volume reference ranges of normal fetuses to conclude the relationship between the volume and gestational age.
From April, 2014 to November, a total of 345 normal fetuses at the 16-38th gestational week (15 normal fetuses at each gestational week) underwent examinination in Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University and were selected. Maximum and minimum bladder volumes of fetuses were measured and the relationship between bladder volume and gestational age were analyzed.
The maximum and minimum bladder volume were obtained in 345 fetuses at the 16-38th gestational week, including average value, standard deviation and 95% confidence intervals. The maximum and minimum bladder volume of normal fetuses were curvilinearly associated with gestational age (R2max=0.99, R2min=0.98, all P<0.01).
Three dimensional ultrasound VOCAL technique can measure the bladder volume which is increasing with the gestational age.
