Abstract:

Objective

To compare the sample satisfaction rate of 21 and 23 gauge needles used in the ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB) of thyroid nodules.

Methods

A total of 123 cases of thyroid puncture patients from January 2015 to February 2015 in our department were included in this study, each nodule was aspirated by both 21G and 23G needles guided by ultrasound, all specimens were produced by liquid-based cytology, the order of 21G and 23G needle was in terms of random table, samples were divided into two groups, satisfied or unsatisfied, then the satisfaction rate between 21G and 23G was compare.

Results

The satisfaction rate of 21G needle aspiration of thyroid nodules was 87.8%, while The satisfaction rate of 23G needle aspiration of thyroid nodules was 86.2%. There was no statistically significant difference between 21G and 23G needles in terms of the sample satisfaction rate (χ2=0.045, P > 0.05).

Conclusion

The results of our study showed that FNA with 23G needles can aspirate adequate material for cytopathological diagnosis. 23G gauge needles may be used as a more secure method for US-FNAB of thyroid nodules in clinical work.
