Abstract:

Objective

To summarize the preoperative ultrasonic characteristics of membranous duodenal stenosis (MDS) in children.

Methods

The ultrasonographic features of 94 children with operation-confirmed MDS were summarized, who underwent ultrasonography and upper gastrointestinal contrast at Beijing Children's Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from 2004 to 2017.

Results

Preoperative ultrasound in 94 patients with MDS showed 81 cases (86.2%, 81/94) of MDS and 65 cases (69.1%, 65/94) of intestinal septum. Of them, the pores were observed in 50.8% (33/65) cases. In all 94 patients septum and duodenal obstruction were confirmed by operation.

Conclusions

Ultrasonography can clearly show the location of intestinal obstruction and identify the septum in the intestine. Ultrasound is helpful in surgical planning, and is the method of choice for the preoperative diagnosis of MDS.
