Abstract:

Objective

To explore the method of implementing ultrasonic teaching ward rounds based on remote teaching mode, evaluate the teaching effects, and discuss its improvement methods.

Methods

The implementation of ultrasonic teaching ward rounds based on remote teaching mode consists of preparation before ward rounds, teaching ward rounds based on remote teaching mode, and follow-up, feedback, and archiving after ward rounds. The questionnaires on teaching ward rounds in the Department of Ultrasound Medicine of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2017 to December 2018 were analyzed, and the questionnaires were collected from 29 students who attended the standardized resident training in the Department of Ultrasound Medicine of Beijing Union Medical College Hospital in 2016 and 2017. The effects of teaching were evaluated and the improvement suggestions were summarized.

Results

Totally, 96.55% of the students agreed that the effects of the standard teaching ward rounds were better than those of case-based discussion. Through the teaching ward rounds, the most obviously improved skills were clinical thinking ability and ultrasonic diagnosis ability (reported by 89.66% and 79.31% of the students, respectively), and skills of communication with patients, basic clinical knowledge, clinical skills, and awarenesses of humanitarian respect and privacy protection were also improved (reported by 48.28%, 41.38%, 31.03%, and 20.69% of the students, respectively). The steps of ultrasonic teaching ward rounds in which students gained the most were case discussion and preparation before ward rounds (reported by 51.72% and 31.03% of the students, respectively), and the steps that need to be improved were case follow-up after ward rounds and case discussion (reported by 58.62% and 20.69% of the students, respectively). The students made constructive suggestions on case selection, case discussion, and follow-up process for the continuous improvement of teaching ward rounds.

Conclusion

The ultrasonic teaching ward rounds based on remote teaching mode can improve the clinical skills and professional ability of students to improve their competency. Meanwhile, it has the advantages of being flexible and convenient and breaking the limits of space, and hence has good application potential.
