Abstract:

Objective

To explore the effect of incorporating case-based retrospective analysis of medical safety adverse events (hereinafter referred to as "adverse events") into ideological and political education in ultrasound medicine courses.

Methods

From November 6 2024 to December 4 2025, we integrated the analysis of adverse events from the Department of Ultrasound at Peking Union Medical College Hospital into the ideological and political education for residents and refresher doctors. We held a total of 5 noon lectures, mainly in the form of lectures, combined with group discussion and free speaking sessions, and attempted to conduct one role-playing of adverse events. Survey questionnaires were distributed after class, the questionnaire results were analyzed and summarized, and the teaching effectiveness was evaluated.

Results

Forty-four questionnaire results were obtained from 25 resident physicians and 19 refresher doctors. Through the sessions, participants gained an understanding of the concept and severity grading of adverse events, as well as the possible sources of adverse events in ultrasound department. They learned and discussed from the perspective of ideological and political education to prevent the recurrence of adverse events, and these discussions culminated in a consensus between instructors and students. The questionnaire survey showed that the refresher doctors had more experience in reporting adverse events than resident physicians (57.89% vs 44.00%; 42.11% vs 0). The overall satisfaction score of the students was 4.77 on a 5-point scale. The students rated the series of lectures as 4.70 (on a 5-point scale) for the assistance in responding to similar events in the coming clinical work.

Conclusion

The application of adverse events analysis as an education tool was well-received by residents and refresher doctors, and this teaching model can help enhance the ideological and political level of physicians and the quality of medical services.
